The Bell Hotel has been an important centre of Sandwich life since Tudor times. A Bell Inn has existed on The Quay, adjacent to the Barbican Gate and Toll, overlooking what would have been the harbour, now the River Stour, since about 1300. The present listed building is mainly 19th century. Today with its 34 en suite bedrooms; a georgian Regency Room catering for up to 100 guests; the Stour conference suite overlooking the river, a brasserie with a menu which varies with seasonal availability and two bars, that importance is set to continue as The Bell undergoes a programme of refurbishment and restoration. There is limited car parking to the front of the hotel and a pay and display car park on the quay, adjacent to the hotel.
The Bell Hotel has a full listing in the 2008 Good Hotel Guide. Click here for details.

“The Place at The Bell” is the name of the brasserie and bar at The Bell Hotel. Clean lines, honey-coloured oak flooring, a mix of brasserie style seating and contemporary dining chairs, and the use of Farrow and Ball paints in shades of white, has created an environment for relaxed and informal dining. Our head chef and his team have helped to create a brasserie menu that varies with seasonal availability, and will appeal to customers who like the freshest foods simply cooked to bring out their fullest natural flavours. Local fish and seafood, salt marsh lamb, vegetables, salads and herbs from nearby farms, all play a part.
The short wine list is carefully chosen from the major wine growing regions of Europe, South America, South Africa and Australasia and includes wines from organic producers and smaller vineyards. We also offer traditional ales, European blond lagers and locally brewed beers and ciders.
For events, weddings and conferences the double height Regency Room with Minstrels’ Gallery has been redecorated, catering for up to 100 people in a beautiful environment. The Stour Room with river views has been refurbished and will seat up to 50 people. The WI FI access, state of the art multimedia facilities and event spaces are flexible enough for formal presentations or informal “brainstorming.”
All 34 en-suite rooms have been redecorated and upgraded. Along with new en suite bathrooms and showers, the use of natural fabrics, the very best mattresses, soft feather or hypoallergenic pillows and duvets, Egyptian cotton sheets, thick fluffy white towels and bespoke toiletries will make your overnight stay much more comfortable and relaxing.
The hotel reception has undergone significant refurbishment. We have discovered, revealed and restored the1920s oak parquet floor hidden for too many years. Light, fresh colours, new soft furnishings, curtains and rugs are all adding to the atmosphere.
We genuinely welcome all customer ideas and comments. Please let our reception staff know if you have any suggestions that you think we should consider.
We also own The Place Camber Sands and The Ship Hotel in Chichester, West Sussex.
