It's amazing what a lick of Farrow & Ball paint can do. The Bell Inn has existed on The Quay at Sandwich since Tudor times and, until recently, was feeling the strain. But its new owners - already famed for making over a cheesy 1950s motel in Camber Sands into a Hamptonesque must-go beack break (The Place) - have chucked out the chintz and buffed up the parquet flooring. The result is a tradional hotel with a satisfying chic modern twist. The best rooms, obvioulsy, are the ones with a balcony and views over the River Stour - on a summer night, throw open your doors, lie back on your four-poster and be lulled into a Zen-like calm by the bobbing of the moored boats.
