

But few first-timers realise this dramatic stretch is as stunning as Cornwall or Devon (the waves are big enough to surf here), or that its wide bays brim with history: it’s where Julius Caesar invaded, after all, and where the first British seaside holiday was taken, back in 1750, thanks to Margate’s crowd-pulling seawater baths.
Even better, its location (just a couple of hours from London) and balmy microclimate mean it’s ideal for a trip in or out of season.
